Catching Fire: A Review

The movie Catching Fire is the second installment of the Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. Set in the future, the film features various different and ‘high tech’ gadgets of the envisioned future. The film is considered to be of the science-fiction genre because of the crucial and instrumental part played by technology in the series. Weapons, transportation, communication, medicine, and even, clothing evolved and was made better in the future.

Aside from showcasing advanced technologies of the future, Catching Fire also discusses and shows the many social and political issues of the human society may it be the past, present, or the future. Social hierarchy is still present in the country of Panem. This hierarchy is shown through the 12 Districts of Panem, District 1 being the richest and the most prosperous District aside from the Capitol, the political, economical, and social capital of Panem. On the other hand, District 12 is the poorest District in Panem functioning mainly because of their coal industry. District 12 is also the home district of the 74th Hunger Games victors Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark. Each district represent various industries and their social classes, from the poorest to the richest district. The economic status of the District is also shown by how the people dress, look, and the gadgets and technologies they use. Peoples of more prosperous Districts like in District 1, and the Capitol, dress extravagantly and flamboyantly to show their wealth and prosperity. Compared to the Districts the are very poor, citizens of these districts dresses simply or raggedy. Peoples of the poorer Districts also does not use very advanced technologies compared to the richer Districts.

Panem has a totalitarian and strict presidential political system led by President Snow. Every District is grounded by strict and harsh rules of the Capitol. In general, humanity seems to act more violent and sadistic, as showcased in the annual Hunger Games. It is like people disrespect and have no regard for other peoples lives. As a result, conflicts arise between Districts. Panem may have the ‘peacekeepers’ the strict and also violent police force of Panem to keep the citizens grounded and checked. But they are one of the things that are wrong in the society and enrages the citizen more and more because they are oppressed. Riots and rebellions are shown in the movie, which may be seen as an ineffective way of governing Panem because the people basically lose their rights as people. The government hold so much control over the people that the people are suffocating on the hold, therefore they are rebelling. And in the form of Katniss Everdeen, the people are gaining the courage to stand up and show their support for the opposition of the Capitol. Another point is because of the technology and its increasing power as a tool of surveillance of the people, the governments hold stronger. The peacekeepers have weapons, armoury, shields, vehicles, and the like, as opposed to the poorer people who don’t have the same privileges and at the same time scared of the technologies and weapons the government/Capitol holds.
