The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is considered a science
fiction film because its story depicts a reality involving futuristic ideas and
other sensitive issues about the society. It present dystopia wherein the goals
and power of the society are held by the selected few, the people in the
Capitol, while not minding the condition of the masses experiencing poverty,
deprivation and depression, those of the districts. It is also set in a
post-apocalyptic period, which uses the concept of “the hunger games” to
commemorate the restoration happening after “the dark days.”
It is evident from the technology and environment of the
people in the film that it tackles what society could be in the future. The
people have been desensitized of the real issues at hand and instead they seek
comfort on the thought that the hunger games is necessary because it has been a tradition for
years, that is they want to preserve tradition at the expense of the lives of
the people. It is not just mere insensitivity but more of a dominance over the
lives of the people by those in control in Panem. The heroine who exhibited
acts of defiance since the first film triggered the president to control her
life more by trapping her again in another hunger games in the second film. This
means that even if they already became victors, their lives would not achieve
peace after all, forever being confined to that reality as tributes.
The advancement of science and technology in Panem is
emphasized in the Capitol and the arena of the hunger games. However, these can
still have some flaws like what happened at the end of the catching fire film
wherein Katniss was able to destroy the arena. This proves that although
science and technology is designed for perfection, it will always have
limitations. Moreover, if you relate science and technology with the society of
the 13 districts, it will be seen that it is very opposite of that in the
Capitol. Therefore, society is failing greatly at the 13 districts and also in
the Capitol. Because if science, technology and society go hand in hand in
pursuit for real progress then it should work towards achieving full potential
in a whole, which failed in Panem because of the few people enjoying wealth and
power in the Capitol while the greater masses are living in despair.
