Individual Project- News Dissemination Using Social Media: The Pros and Cons

#WalangPasok

News dissemination in the 21st century dramatically changed in the era of social networks, smart phones and tablets. 10 years ago, students would have to watch the news broadcast on TV for an announcement of class suspension when there is a storm. Decades before that students would wait for the announcement through the radio. Nowadays it is just a matter of refreshing your Twitter or Facebook news feeds and following the hashtag “WalangPasok”. With the internet, information is readily available to us but with social media, current event information is available as it happens no matter where we are (or as long as you have internet connection)
With the fast-paced stream of information flowing through the internet and into our personal news feeds, fact-checking is easily overlooked. This is the downside of news dissemination through social media: it is easy to spread false information. Unlike TV news reports and radio broadcasts, tweets and Facebook posts don’t have to go through rigorous fact-checking and revisions before making information public and just about anyone can do it.
Social Media has made the circulation of news and information faster than ever. However, we should always be careful with the things we click and share. A simple tweet of “UP Diliman Chancellor: Classes are suspended tomorrow. #WalangPasok” can cause some students to retweet and share it even though it lacks legitimacy.
